Propane Gas Prices Soar - Buy it Now!

August 7, 2006 / by mrblue

My house is a 3 bedroom/2 bath ranch style. And my house
itself is not a large home. Average I would say at about 1900
square feet of living space. That does not include the garage,
shop, rec room, porches (one screen enclosed porch). It sits
on about 8 acres of property, woods, pond.

Although not a large home, it is actually almost more than I
can handle. Thank goodness for ex's that don't all live in
Texas! My ex usually does the yard work and landscaping
for me. In fact, I don't even use all the rooms in my home...
not really. The guest bedroom rarely sees a guest and it's
lucky if it sees me.

My house has central heat and air and gee has it been
getting the run this summer with all the hot weather down
here in West Tennessee. In fact my electric bill is much
higher in the summer months than it is in the winter months.
That is because I rarely use the central heat in the winter.

I use PROPANE and have a 500 gallon tank. In my living
room, I have a gas fire place that will heat up the entire house
in no time flat. So that is where the gas goes from the
propane tank...to the fire place.

Winter before last, I used about 700 gallons thru the winter.
Last year I decided to do my part and be stingy with the
propane. Guess what? I did really save! Last winter I
used one full tank...less than 500 gallons. So I saved
compared to the winter before last. Just in case you're
wondering...propane fillers never fill the tanks to the tip
top. Usually a 15% space is left in the tank for safety.

I don't remember what I paid for propane the winter before
last but I do know what I paid for it last winter. According
to my receipt, last winter I paid $1.79 a gallon. Here again,
I should make clear that I DON'T buy propane in the winter...
unless I was to run short of course.

For propane users, we know that it is cheaper to buy
propane in the summer and fall. If you are new to using
propane, best get on the phone right now and call your
propane dealer. Prices go up the closer it gets to winter.
And in the winter, the prices can be very high compared
to what is paid in the summer.

So here it is August and it is blazing hot down here near
Memphis. But...I remember I best be calling the propane
people. Today I picked up the phone and called them.
"How much is the propane right now?" I ask. The reply
"Get it Now..it's $2.05". I said "Do you foresee any drop?"
The reply "Not on your life...it will go up and it's liable to
skyrocket". My reply "Send him on down for a 500 gallon
fillup".

I did the math. Last year at this time I paid $1.79 a gallon.
This year at the basic same time, I am paying $2.05 a gallon.

Last Year = 500 gallons x $1.79 = $895
This Year = 500 gallons x $2.05 = $1,025

So this year, I am paying $130 more for propane than I
did last year.

That may not seem like much of a difference. But you
go write the check out for $130 more and it just don't
make for a happy camper. In addition, don't forget, I am
buying at the 'cheap' time of year. Heaven forbid we have
a bad winter down here and I need to call for more propane.
Well I could easily be paying in the dead of winter $3 a
gallon...and according to what's going on in the market
place....I could easily be paying way more than $3 a
gallon.

And here is something else to think about. I'm 50 years
old. Not like my bones are real old yet so I'm not the little
old lady that freezes from drafts. I don't have young children
at home so it's not like I have to keep every room in my house
warm as toast.

I lived very comfortably on one tank of propane last winter.
I did take the time out to place up my heavier drapes on
the windows for winter, replaced wore down thresholds
and that rubber stuff that attaches to the bottom of the
doors. I also closed the vents in the guest bedroom and
kept the door closed more often than not. In addition I
kept the utility room door closed more often. I turned
the fire place heat down low at bed time. By taking a
few simple steps, I was able to save. Compared to
the winter before last to last winter...I saved over 200
gallons....over 200 gallons that I did not have to buy.

It's not just about saving in your pocket book. It's about
the entire economy. Everyone should do their part to
save energy. We need to think about global warming
too and what the future holds for those that are here
after we are long gone.

Do a search in google. You'll find lots of complaints
in regards to propane.....oh what do you call it...
scandles. In other words, there are some propane
companies that WON'T deliver propane now because
they know the price is going to go up and they can
in turn raise it higher netting a larger profit. Thank
goodnes my propane company 'Lewis Gas' in
Huntingdon, TN. is not phishing....errrrr you know
what I mean. I'll have the propane I need to get me
thru the winter...but I will see if I can be stingy with
it this winter even more so than last winter.

Use propane? Buy it NOW.

$1.79 per gallon would be a steal in todays market!  We try to conserve propane each winter as you do.  In the past, we have found that propane prices are not always connected to the time of the year.  We looked at our receipts and found prices going down in some cases as we entered winter.  We may decide to buy a tank this year to hopefully get a better price this year.   We found a new website with some helpful information: http://www.localpropaneservice.com/
